two sheets and a pie

I made a pie from scratch!  We got some rhubarb straight from the garden, so naturally...a strawberry rhubarb pie.  I followed the recipe from Smitten Kitchen, my new go-to recipe site.  It is very yummy.  Max kept saying "apple pie!" and could not be convinced it was not.  But he did say "rhubarb" and ate more of that than the strawberries.  The recipe called for "decorative slits" and "decorative crimping", not sure I mastered that, but there is always next time.

I also finished a couple sheets for the bassinet the baby will be sleeping in at first.  We have Max's old crib, but since his bedroom is so tiny we are going to wait to set it up for a couple months.  We'll just use this borrowed one since it is small and has wheels letting us roll it in our room, living room, Max's room, etc.

Both made from some large vintage sheets I've collected.  This one is cream with yellow flowers.

And yellow with green, yellow, and pink flowers.

welcome to the 21st century kari

I have an iPhone, woo!  For the past two years I've had a phone that you can only talk and text on.  Have you even heard of such a thing?  People would send me pictures and not only could I not open them, but my phone wouldn't even notify me I had a message.  Lame.  And friends probably thought I was super rude for not replying how cute their kids were.

I love the nice weather.  Yesterday Max and I ran some errands, went to the park and then got a huge watermelon and had a snacky lunch (cheese and watermelon).  It was a warm day and I was craving cold, sweet watermelon, mmm.

I have Instagram on my new phone.  It took me a while to understand it and I'm not sure I still do completely, but whatever.  Check out how big this bowl of watermelon is.
 Happy boy.
I am excited that I can start to share more everyday moments of our lives, especially when the new baby comes.  That's what Max call it, "new baby".  And whenever we ask whether he thinks it will be a boy or girl he says it will be a baby.  Smart boy.

happy mother's day!

I had a great mother's day this year.  It started out with a treat to myself, I finally made the vintage fabric banner I've been wanting to make forever.  I love these simple projects that add a little charm to my home and make me smile.  I know my taste isn't the same as other's, but I do what I like and am lucky enough to have a husband who doesn't care how I decorate the house.

I have a new favorite foodie site called Smitten Kitchen.  She is a great food photographer first of all, which makes everything look yummier.  We celebrated Mother's Day at my house with a low-key outdoor breakfast.  I thought these muffins were perfect..summery and happy, raspberry topped lemon muffins.  They were definitely delish and the raspberry was a little melted when you bit into the muffin...mmm.

Pretty flowers from my husband we planted in the garden later that day.

I also made this raspberry infused water, I saw on Jamie Oliver's website.  It was good and refreshing, but most of all really pretty.  A good party drink.  However, I am a no-pulp kinda gal, so I would have rather it was strained.

.

Our roses bloomed just for the event.

My mom made her famous egg casserole (famous because I always ask her to make it for breakfast events and it's awesome).  Yum.

These two pip-squeaks are my fav.  Max and his sweet cousin Etta.  How cute can you get?

Backs to the party.

Later in the afternoon, after nap and a couple melt downs we went to the park.  Have you ever seen a happier boy than this?

I have so much to be thankful for.  Max makes me laugh, cry, angry, amazed every day, but I love him so much.  I am excited to meet our new one in the next few weeks.  I am lucky to have such a supporting and loving mom- who I talk to every day.  I am lucky to have a mother-in-law that would bend over backwards for us, who did such a good job raising the son that I love.  I am lucky to have a sister who amazes me every day- she is my role model and always has been.  She is raising two of the sweetest, cutest, smartest kids I've met.  I am lucky to have friends that are great moms who talk me back into sanity when I feel like running from the house screaming.

It was a great day filled with great food, sunshine...

But best of all, family.

(He hates having his picture taken, hence the grimace when Mama gives him a kiss for the camera.)

magic paint board

I do finger painting with Max, watercolor too, play-dough, etc.  But these activities are a little messy.  I made Max one of these magic paint boards for a painting activity without the mess.  I got the idea from Fo' Reals Mom.  You can paint the special kind of paper with water, and then it dries in minutes so you can keep painting new pictures.  I painted the frames blue and put a little foam board behind the brushstroke paper.  I could only find the brushstroke paper on Amazon, when I asked in Blik and Michaels I got some blank stares.

Masterpiece!

Getting a temporary tattoo while we waited for the masterpiece to dry...

And begin again with the hardcore monkey tattoo for some street cred.

bookshelf...finally!

We finally put our bookshelf up!  The brackets are from the Container Store, we painted them black though.  And the shelf is just a piece from Home Depot we stained.  I stole the idea from my brother in law.  I love how much stuff these shelves can hold, but are still out of the way.  And you can make the shelf any length you want.

We actually put the entire thing up in our dining room, only to find out that the dimensions on the packaging are slightly off and there wasn't enough room to make the shelf level.  So....we had to move it to our hallway, which I never would have chosen, but actually turned out pretty cute.  This is part hallway and part kitchen area for us.

The one thing I realized during this project is that John's books make him look much smarter than me.  Whatever, I like my Devil Wears Prada girl dramas...

I started to buy up these cool vintage thermoses, I love the way they look.

I found these National Geographic books at a resale shop and was able to buy the entire collection for $10!  I love the way they look, as well as my mom's old suitcase.  So fun.
